the maintenance overhead is usually what kills the budget, especially when u factor in the hidden unplanned engineering hours spent fixing broken pipelines. we tried building a custom abstraction layer for our k8s clusters and ended up with a team of three people just managing the glue code instead of shipping features. it basically became our full-time job lol
